Verge is a science-fiction graphic novel about a training cadet named Zodiak who along with the Winterbourne brothers (Murtagh and Edwin) are stranded on a hostile planet due to Zodiak’s actions and must find a way for survival.
Training as a cadet for the Andromedan Alliance, Zodiak Altarius hopes to one day uphold justice as an Andromedan Agent. But after his mentor Darian is killed in a planetary war, Zodiak’s attitude towards criminals skews toward icy and merciless. This mindset leads to insubordination when he pursues two fugitives- the Winterbourne brothers- through a prototype wormhole generator. The act ends with him stranded on a hostile planet.
With a callous military bot as his only aid, Zodiak must get off-world within 65 hours or the toxic environment will kill him, if the wildlife doesn’t first. Then he learns the Winterbournes are also on the planet. He faces a terrible choice; commandeer the Winterbourne’s ship, leaving them to die, or risk his own life searching for an alternative. The choice seems obvious-- they’re fugitives, after all. But as Zodiak carries out the plan, he sees his own draconian ideals reflected in the military bot’s brutal algorithm. Is he being the upholder of justice he wants to be, or has grief over Darian’s death turned him into the villain of his own story?
Rated YA for action/peril, violence, and sensitive topics.
